On the past posts of the series ”Introductory course to learn to crochet” (Part 1 ,Part 2 and Part 3) we learned to choose the necessary material, how to make the firsts steps and to single crochet. Now it is time to start practicing what we learned and have fun crocheting.
You can do plenty of things with single crochet stitch. It is the basic crochet stitch.
To practice single crocheting I propose to make this beautiful scarf, which is really easy. I made it on a baby size but you can make it on any size.
{Material}
- Thick yarn
- A crochet
I propose to use really thick yarn for this first project, so it would be really really fast and you could see soon some results!!!
{How to make the sample?}
For this particular project it is not really important to make a sample (it does not really matter if the scarf mesures 1,5 m or 1,65 m..) Nevertheless, we would learn how to sample, so you could apply it for other projects.
Steps:
Step 1) Chain 15 stitches (don’t know how to chain? please visit this post).
Step 2) Make 5 rows of single crochet (don’t know how to single crochet? Please visit this post).
Step 3) Lay the sample flat and mesure it. In my case it measures 17 cm x 5 cm.
Step 4) We are going to suppose we want a 150 cm long scarf and 20 cm wide. Make the following conversion factor (no problem with basic mathematics, right?):
V = 20 cm x 5 rows / 5 cm = 20 rows
Round the results, eh! (we cannot make 132,35 punts, neither 5,4 rows..jeje).
( -> Detail on rounding:
- If the first decimal is greater than 5, add one at the integer part of the operation resultant number. In mathematics: If the result of the operation is x.y, being y > 5, we will take x + 1.
- If the first decimal is smaller than 5, take the integer part of the number. In mathematics: if the operation result is x.y, with y<5, we will take x
- If the first decimal is equal 5, check the next decimal and do as the previous cases. )
What do these results mean? To get a 150 cm long x 20 cm wide scarf we will need 132 stitches and 20 rows. (yes we are working the scarf longitudinally, not vertically, I think this way it is faster! (or seems to be so..))
{Procedure to make the scarf}
Step 1) Chain as much stitches as you had calculated (don’t know how to chain? please visit this post). .
Step 2) Work as many rows as necessary in single crochet (don’t know how to single crochet? Please visit this post)..
That is!! Easy, isn’t it??
On this case, as the scarf is made with 100% wool yarn, I was afraid it could bother my daughter, so I lined it with cotton fabric, and I think the result ist quite cool!
{Variations}
This scarf could look great if you make it by combining 2 coordinated colors yarn. You can work two rows on one color and two on the other.
I’ve published this post here.
Have a great week-end!

This is so what I have needed. I have bought the yarn, had it for over a year…and had no clue how to start! I can’t wait to start catching up on your series. I found you through skiptomylou and would love for my readers to meet you. Please share this at my “Meet Me Monday” linky party! They would love to meet you. Either way….I am going to be following you and am getting ready to subscribe to email. Thank you so much! Love, Me http://www.youaretalkingtoomuch.com
